God calls us into community. From the start, God urges followers to look beyond ourselves, to care for and allow ourselves to be changed by the stranger in our midst. We enact God’s desire for unity with all of creation when we come together to worship, especially when our worshipping body is diverse, and it is in being together, in breaking bread and sharing Christ in Communion, that we are given a taste of God’s heavenly banquet.
Everyone is able to pray, and Scripture promises that the Holy Spirit intercedes for us when we cannot, with sighs too deep for words (Romans 8:26). We worship together so that, alongside our private prayers, we can worship with common prayer. In praying together, we take on the cares and concerns of each individual. We celebrate together and we share the burden of pain and sorrow.
Why We Worship Together
Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or
weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who
sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless
the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the
joyous; and all for your love's sake. Amen.
Together, we are nourished by God’s word and by Holy Communion, and only by coming together and allowing ourselves to be changed by the experience can we be sent out once more to follow Christ in the cares and occupations of our lives.
